sad to say that  Emma Kelly ,the Lady of 6000 songs,
died in January 2001. She will be missed, but she has several CDs out.
I wish I could live in Savannah, but my husband's job makes impossible.

Comments: Hello, what a nice and joyful surprise to have found this site. But I am still a little confused about the actual version of the song I remember from my childhood. Is there a correct version to: "Mairzy Dotes" or is it "Mares Eat Oats"? I have always thought it was the first version my husband thinks it's the literal second version. Which is it?
Sincerely'

The original lyrics in French with accents on the right place.

This song was sung the first time in 1946 by Yves Montand, the french singer-actor who had played in " The Millionaire ", the great comedy of George Cukor with your glamourous Marilyn Monroe.

Yves Montand is the principal actor in " Les Portes de la Nuit " of Marcel Carné, a great french director)

It is a sad love story after the Second World War in France.

The story was wrote by the great french poet Jacques Prevert with the music of Joseph Kosma, his friend.

The french Lyrics are different but Johnny Mercer had kept the poetic mind of the french words. The lyrics of Mercer are less melancholic than the french words. This movie is in the period of “ French Realism “.

Dark times in France.

For people who wants the meaning of the french lyrics, I can translate.

Comments: Hello From France,

I saw your site about Johnny Mercer.

Johnny Mercer don't create " Autumn Leaves " but he adapted it in English and made it famous in your language.

The songwriter is the French poet Jacques Prevert and the music is from his friend Joseph Kosma.

They created this song for the french movie " Les Portes de La nuit " from the Director Marcel Carné, screenplay by Jacques Prevert with the French actor Yves Montand .

I hope you change this false information.

thank You

Comments: I was born in the 30's and grew up hearing his Johnny's music on the radio and in the movies. Many of his songs are on my "Favorites" list. Mercer was truly one of the most talented people in the music business and, as far as this old gal is concerned, one of the finest lyricists ever created. I'm so glad I've been around long enough to know what REAL music is supposed to sound like. What a pity so many of our young people will never experience "A Johnny Mercer moment" in their memories.

Comments: I'm a big fan of big bands and their vocalists, and Mercer's music is woven around and through so many ballads of the '30s and '40s. I'll be 75 in September and the music and lyrics of Mercer and others brings me back to a less complex time. I shall visit your sight often. Thanks! Tom

I grew up in Newport Beach, California and went to school with Johnny's son, Jeff. I currently live in Austin, Texas ( God Bless "Dubya") and write and perform music more or less professionally. I have fond memories of Johnny coming to my high school football games and hanging out with Jeff and our friend Mike Ober on Lido Island in the Sixties. My father was so impressed when i introduced him to Johnny. Anyway, God Bless and keep up the good work.

Best,
Chris Wall

Comments: Visited Savannah in January of this year and had the opportunity to visit Johnny Mercer's grave at Bonaventure Cemetary. Find myself humming "Dream" to myself a lot these days. What a great artist he was. Have been trying to find a book of his songs (for intermediate piano), without much luck. Would appreciate any suggestions.
