Once saw Johnny Mercer having lunch at the "Tail 'O The Cock" resaurant on Ventura Blvd. in Hollywood making up a song using the contents of their menu... (There used to be a small "cocktail" (short keyboard) piano and player who pushed the piano around the dining room.

Interesting website.

I am thrilled to find a website on Johnny Mercer. I am a new fan who would like to find out how to obtain the only book in print about him that is no longer in print.

The mere existence of an educatonal site on a personage of the stature of Johnny Mercer is encouraging. I have recently begun a quest for any and all information about Harry Ruby. I thought it would be easy, but it has become a major frustration and now a challenge. Discovering a covey of like minded people will keep me going and possibly someone can give me help. If I cannot find a biograpy about Harry Ruby I may have to write one. I know this is a Johnny Mercer, but my father who died at 86 just last year taught me a real appreciation for ppoular music especially tinpan alley and its descendants. Harry Ruby is my quest.

I always loved the song "I Remember You". I was looking at an old Newspaper clipping, from Ann Landers, I had saved with some of the words, and his name. At the time of the clipping I did not have the internet. I was surprised to findout that he wrote "Moon River". I first sang that song in High School in Chicago, 1968. Then I used to sing it to my two girls when they were babies, 1981 - 1986. Now I only sing to myself, when I'm feeling blue.

I travel to Savannah at least two times a year. I own time share on Tybee Island. In May of 1999 we traveled to Burnside Island to find Johnny Mercer's home. We stopped at a house where a lady was doing some gardening and told her we had grown up with Johnny's music and were looking for his home. She was so sweet - she told us it was right next door and that we should ask to take pictures. She also said that if they wouldn't permit us to go out on the pier to take pictures of "Moon River", that we should come back to her and she would let us go out on her pier. We went next door and that lady was also extremely nice and let us walk all over her property. We took pictures to our heart's content. We didn't want to hurt the first lady's feelings so we went back to her house and she took us on a tour of her property also. Savannah people continue to live up to the name of the "most polite people in the world". My maternal grandmother was born in Georgia so it always feels like home. I love to come back to Savannah every year and will be back this May.

Johnny Mercer is without question the greatest composer of my lifetime. But many forget the contributions he made in the vocal department. Who can forget the songs with the Pied Pipers such as Candy and Ugly Child? He was truely a very talented person. J

I first discovered JOHNNY MERCER in 1993 when i bought ELLA FITZGERALD's songbook. After RICHARD RODGERS ,he has become one of my favourite composer . HE certainly deserves a website celebrating his talent.

Saw the site of Buddy Clark sings Mercer. I have collected Buddy's recordings over the years. I have just about every thing he recorded on commercial records and also many of the transcription records and many of the Contented Hour Recordings. Mercer's songs are always my favorites.

I connected to Mercer first through the song "Moon River". My father played it on piano when I was a boy. He didn't play an active role in my life after age 9, but the longing evident in that song fit well into my feelings about him and I will always be reminded of the good things I shared with him when I hear it. As an adult I first saw "Breakfast at Tiffanys" Moon River appropriately haunts the entire soundtrack. My wife and I were bicycle touring Ireland years ago and had recently seen the film, and she told me she'll never forget the night I drank 10 pints and raced through the fog ahead of her after it closed, the only way she knew where i was was because i was singing Moon River at the top of my lungs. We both read the book,Midnight in the Garden of Bad and not so bad and did the book tour which included a visit to Mercer's grave site and the oppourtunity to sit on his piano bench marker, BTW which Leonard Bernstein also has at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, and toast him with wine. My wife got ill on that trip and I took a stranger up to our hotel room to view her in her sickness after having a few. She didn't like that. Anyhoo, I've learned a lot about Mr. Mercer from this site and was happy to find it.
