Latest info available to me indicates "You Go Your Way,I'll Go My
Way" was a song for which JM provided both words and music although I had
originally thought the composer was Robert Emmet Dolan.I have an off-air
recording of this song performed by Margaret Whiting but ,so far, nobody to
whom I have mentioned it seems to have heard of it.It's one of his last songs
and , in view of its lyric, must be of special interest to Mercer fans.

The Johnny Mercer website is a great discovery.I was 10 when I
first heard a Mercer lyric sung by a small child at a school concert in
London. In my teens I remember him as a performer on record with Judy
Garland("Friendship")and "The Waiter ....etc".Does anybody know one og his
last songs, music by Robert Emmet Dolan, and called "You Go Your Way,I'll Go
My Way", recorded by Margaret Whiting? It has a wonderful elegiac quality.

I'm a singer of jazz and pop standards from the 1920s to the
1950s. Without a doubt, Johnny Mercer is my favorite lyricist and I often
mention this on my gigs because I always include his songs in my repertoire.
He was definitely a genius.

My father Marshall Robbins was Johnny's music publisher for 28
years. Just my father aand Johnny in an ofice in Hollywood. Also, my
grandfather Jack Robbins had him under contract at MGM before he went to
Paramount. Absolutely the greatest of America's lyricists. He once told me,
"there are more words then music notes", always remembered that and I tell the
writers I work with today the same thing.

songs durning his career. That is truly remarkable.

I visit Savannah constantly and grew up with Johnny Mercer's
songs. (I am a 73 chronologically gifted great grandma). I recently visited
his home on Burnside Island and the people there were absolutely charming and
wonderful!!! I will be returning to Tybee Island in May, 2000. The Mercer
house on Monterey Square had the name "Mercer Wilder" house on the sign when I
first visited in 1993 but then it became only the Mercer house later. I looked
up the history of the original building and found that while Johnny Mercer's
great grandfather had began the building of the house and as you know it was
interrupted by the Civil War - a man named John Wilder completed the building
of the house but did not live there (or not that I can find). Naturally this
increases my interest in this house. My maternal grandmother was born near
Atlanta in 1861 and so I feel very at home in Georgia!!
