I was a fan of Johnny Mercer for many years and agree that he was one of the greatest songwriters and singers that has lived in my life time (I'm 70). I still recognize his voice today when I hear him sing. Your web-site is great. I have visited it several times, but this is the first time I've taken time to sign your guestbook. Thanks for all your efforts.

Dear Steve, Many thanks for the e mail regarding a reciprocal link. Andy is 35 and the #1 easy listening / swing artist in the UK. As Andy sings many Johnny Mercer songs including "Goody Goody", "That Old Black Magic" and "Come Rain Or Come Shine" in his hit show currently touring the UK a link to your site from ours would contain these facts. Let me know what you think of our site and if possible sign our visitors book. Best wishes Peter Malski

What a find! Johnny Mercer's certainly one of our country's greatest lyricists. A pretty good singer, too, as I recall. I didn't know he had grown up in Savannah, but it makes sense. To me, Savannah represents the charm of the South, and that spirit was evident in Mercer's words. Thanks for this wonderful website. I'll be back frequently.

I had a reply for one of your persons who contacted me directly via e-mail. My e-mail postmaster says that address doesn't exist. Here is my reply to Howell The recording (CD) is "An Evening With Johnny Mercer" and was recorded as part of "Lyrics and Lyricists" series by Maurice Levine -- Live at the 92nd Street YM and YWHA in New York City on March 14, 1971.Produced by Maurice Levine. My CD carries the logo of DRG and Produced by ML Record company (assuming ML stands for Maurice Levine). The DRG CD #is 5176. DRG marketed the CD under license in 1977. Commentary states that my copy was made in Canada. Mercer is "assisted by Margaret Whiting and Robert Sands with Richard Leonard at the piano. It is a continuous track recording (no track divisions) covering the evening commentary and music (much of it sung by Mercer) of Johnny Mercer tracing his life and the songs or lyrics he wrote. Other in the "An Evening" series include: Ebb and Kander - DRG 5171 Sammy Cahn - DRG 5172 Jerry Herman - DRG 5173 Sheldon Harnick - DRG 5174 Alan Jay Lerner - DRG 5175 I hope that you can find the disc. Johnny Mercer was a great poet. His love of the English language and his use of the vagaries therein are a joy to the ear. The unexpected rhymes and the whimsy are the hallmarks of a Mercer lyric.

I have signed the guestbook before. However, I want to call your attention to an essay by Gene Lees in his book, Singers and the Song, published by Oxford University Press. The article on Johnny Mercer is called "Roses in the Morning". Lees is an author of several biographies--Oscar Peterson and Woody Herman. He also publishes his own newsletter as well as being a lyricist. He was a good friend of Mercer. I think the essay helps to "round out" the character of Johnny Mercer, and it should be read.

Delighted to see a Johnny Mercer page. What a great humen being. I met Johnny Mercer in 1950 in front of "Coffee Dan's" on Vine Street in Hollywood. Of all things, and true to his nature, he was showing a shoe shine boy how to shine shoes: the shoe shine boy on the chair. I dearly love Johnny Mercer, his music, and his wonderful personality. I don't think that "Dream", especially as recorded by his good friend Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers will ever be equalled as a great ballard. I also like his humorus stuff like "Glow-worm", "My Sugar is So Refined" and "Conversation While Dancing" among others. If someone can tell me where to find 'Conversation...', I'd be grateful if you let me know. Keep up the great web site on Johnny Mercer, a true human being, southerner, and American. John V.
